Post Harvest Profile of Wheat

Wheat is second largest cereal in India after rice. Due to adoption of modern production technology, the production of wheat was accelerated from 6087 thousand M.T. in the year 1948-49 to 74251 thousand M.T. in the year 2000. As a result, huge marketed surplus was generated in the country, which manifested in multifarious marketing problems. The Inter-Ministerial Task Force on Agricultural Marketing Reforms visualized the constraints confronted by the farmers in marketing of wheat. Accordingly, the task force strongly recommended for preparation of “Post Harvest Profiles” of major agricultural commodities including wheat. In order to launch awareness programmes on massive scale to educate the farmers and other market functionaries.
This Profile
of Wheat contains various aspects of post harvest management, marketing functions
and services, marketing channels, costs and margins, Sanitary and
Phyto-Sanitary requirements, alternative system of marketing and other related
information.
