India is the largest producer of Sesame (Sesamum indicum L.) in the world. It contributed 27.75 percent of the total area under Sesame seed with 20.88 percent of total world production during 2004. Sesame has a premier place in the production of oilseeds in India and has a good export potential. Export of sesame seeds were mainly to USA, Netherlands, Korea R.P, Taiwan, Germany, Greece, Turkey, etc. It is rich source of vitamins E, A, B complex, Niccin and Minerals. Sesame oil is used in manufacturing of soaps, cosmetics, perfumes, insecticides and pharmaceutical products. The profile has been prepared keeping in view the farming community to enable them to manage scientifically the post-harvest operations in respect of Sesame crop in order to realize higher price in the market. This profile covers almost all aspects of the marketing of Sesame which includes various post-harvest management, marketing practices, quality and standards, grading, packaging, transportation, storage, SPS requirements, etc. This Profile has been prepared by Shri MANISH KUMAR CHOUDHARY, Marketing Officer under the supervision and guidance of Shri B.
