Post Harvest Profile of Paddy/Rice

P R E F A C E

|
Indian agriculture has made rapid progress
in augmenting the foodgrain production from 51 million tonnes
in 1950-51 to 196.13 million tonnes in 2000-01 which
includes 85.5 million tonnes of paddy. Today The Inter-Ministerial Task
Force on Agricultural Marketing Reforms suggested several measures for
strengthening agricultural marketing system in the country in their report
submitted in May, 2002, for benefiting the farming community from the new
global market opportunities, to foster true competition among the market
players and to enhance the share of farmers in the ultimate price of their
agricultural produce. This profile has been prepared with a view to enable the
farming community to scientifically manage the post-harvest operations in
respect of paddy / rice crop in order to realize higher price in the market.
The profile covers almost all aspects of the marketing of paddy / rice, which
include post-harvest management, marketing practices, standards and quality,
grading, packaging, transportation, storage, SPS requirements, etc. This profile has been
