ANALYSIS
OF TRANSPORTATION USED
Pattern of vehicular traffic in a market is an important variable for
improving marketing efficiency. Efficient
and conducive transport facility will help produce reach safe and fresh in a
shortest period. The large-scale
movement of agricultural commodities, that marketing entails, requires an
efficient transport system. The
perish- ability of fruit and vegetables attaches added importance to marketing
time and therefore, the need of a rapid distribution mechanism.
Arrival and dispatches of fruit and vegetables in our country are handled
by various modes of transport. The
transportation medium of a market depends upon the nature of trade taking place
in that market as well as the communication links available in that area.
It also depends on the size and kind of the market as well as its
location.
It has been observed that major modes of transport used in carrying and dispatching the produce from/to the markets are trucks, mini trucks (including other motorized vehicles), animal carts, rickshaws, bicycles and head loads. However, their uses distinctly differ in different kinds of markets. The results obtained from 115 markets reveals that 96% markets of the state (109) record entry of less than 50 trucks on a normal market day. Regarding the means of transport to carry the agricultural producers-cum-sellers from nearby places themselves carry their small consignment on head and bicycles also. In markets of category B, C and D, small trucks and other types of light commercial vehicles are used in addition to head loads and trucks. In very large markets, though, all types of vehicles including head loads are put to service for carrying the goods but most important mode is truck. Major means of transport are generally hired by a group of sellers jointly depending upon the volume of the produce and the destination.
Analysis of the data obtained through the empirical survey of all markets of Chhatishgarhis given in the following paragraphs. Details regarding the number and type of vehicles entering the markets and going to different destinations on a normal activity day are indicated in Annexures. Distribution of markets according to number of vehicles entering in the markets are given as under:
